Historic California Drought
California is now facing the worst drought in the records. Californians are being urged to use less water to help conserve water. Governor Jerry Brown called for a 20% conservation effort throughout the state.
This is really hurting the farmers in California since they supply a lot of the nation's crops like lettuce, onions, garlic, and tomatoes. This drought might have many effects throughout the nation, especially when prices rise in grocery stores. This won't impact just the people in California, but also many other consumers throughout the United States. The financial impact of the drought could actually be in the billions of dollars. According to the National Climatic Data Center, the drought could cost up to $30 billion dollars.
Crisis in Venezuela
There have been clashes between protesters and police lately in Venezuela. The protests have been going on since February 12, which had global attention when three people were killed. The protesters want an end to goods shortages, better security, and they want to be protected for freedom of speech. Many protesters are are students. Many opposition politicians are protesting as well. Top Venezuelan officials are blaming the United States for trying to undermine the government. Venezuela made three United States diplomats leave the country because they were condemned for planning to bring down the government. I don't know why the Venezuelan government is blaming the United States when they should be addressing the problems of their own people.

Ukraine Protests
Ukraine's president has declared a truce for his nation and start negotiations. Even after this was declared more protests broke put on the street of Kiev. So far about twenty six people have been killed during that bloody protest.
The protests have been going on for a long time and the protesters want their current president Viktor Yanukovych replaced. They believe that he has too much power, and the people didn't like that he backed out of a trade pact with the European union and partnered with Russia on situations they didn't like.

U.S. Medal Sweep
The U.S. had a medal sweep in the 2014 Winter Olympics for mens' slopestyle skiing. Joss Christensen came in first, beating teammates Gus Kenworthy and Nick Goepper. This is only the third time this has happened for the U.S. for the Olympics.
So far the U.S is second in the Olympics for the number of medals, right behind the Netherlands. So far we have 20 medals: six gold medals, four silver medals, and ten bronze medals. We are fourth in number of gold medals behind Germany, Norway, and the Netherlands.

Sink Hole
A giant sink hole opened up in Bowling Green, Kentucky, swallowing up eight collector Corvettes. These cars were priceless and some are buried so deep they can't even be seen. The estimated damages are in the millions. This all happened before the museum open which I guess is the only good thing since some people may have been injured.
"There are times where there are so many people in that room, you can't even move around," said Engineer Matthew Dettman. The thing is, this is probably not as unusual as some might think since Bowling Green, like so many places in Kentucky, is over a huge cave system.
This makes me wonder if the interstate could collapse, taking with it all the cars traveling at that time. It's possible that there could be sink holes underneath neighborhoods, schools and businesses. Maybe the government officials in Bowling Green should hire some engineers to check out the stability of some of the public places, including the roads.

Marius
Despite a petition at Copenhagen Zoo to prevent the killing of one of the animals, a young healthy giraffe named Marius was shot while eating. The zoo said that Marius was part of a breeding program, but his genes weren't needed. They also said that they had too many giraffes.
I believe the zoo did have other alternatives rather than killing it. They could have stopped the breeding program or they could have let another zoo have him. One zoo in England actually said that they would take him, but the request was denied.
The worst part of this event was that Marius was cut up and fed to the zoo's carnivores after he was killed. This all happened while young children were watching. I believe this was a horrible thing for children to witness, and that it gave them the idea that killing a defenseless animal is okay.
