Marius

Despite a petition at Copenhagen Zoo to prevent the killing of one of the animals, a young healthy giraffe named Marius was shot while eating. The zoo said that Marius was part of a breeding program, but his genes weren't needed. They also said that they had too many giraffes.

I believe the zoo did have other alternatives rather than killing it. They could have stopped the breeding program or they could have let another zoo have him. One zoo in England actually said that they would take him, but the request was denied.

The worst part of this event was that Marius was cut up and fed to the zoo's carnivores after he was killed. This all happened while young children were watching. I believe this was a horrible thing for children to witness, and that it gave them the idea that killing a defenseless animal is okay.
